（在比歌德版本早二百多年的 Christopher Marlowe 版 里，梅菲斯特身旁有个天使给浮士德指出了另一条路：“你迷茫了，应该去读「圣经」；你失落了，应该去读「圣经」；你绝望了，还是应该去读「圣经」。在「圣经」里你可以找到人生的一切答案。”

但浮士德也是神学大家，自诩已经能把「圣经」倒背如流。他不屑的抛开天使的劝告，提笔签下了和魔鬼的契约。）

在“Marlowe 版”里，接下来的剧情有些讽刺：签下了这么重要的契约后，浮士德跟着魔鬼享受的，却都是些相对胡闹无聊的小把戏：他们免费吃喝，免费旅游，去戏弄教皇，去扰乱王宫。

在歌德版本里，梅菲斯特也是先带着浮士德试了几个类似的小把戏。但浮士德乃当世大儒，对这类低级趣味的享受完全提不起兴趣。

这一切当然也都在梅菲斯特意料之中。男人吗，他还是很了解的。他带浮士德去了一个女巫的厨房，给他吃下了返老还童的神药。

浮士德眼睁睁看着自己的长须退去，皱纹消隐，佝偻的腰背重新挺拔起来，瞬间变回了个二十多岁的青年，雄姿英发，羽扇纶巾。

甚至那久违的青春悸动和欲望，在一瞬间都回来了。

当然光有青春显然是不够的。梅菲斯特立刻安排了浮士德在街头‘邂逅’，‘偶遇’从教堂忏悔回来的美女马加蕾特（Margaret）。

在德语里马加蕾特又叫葛丽卿（Gretchen）。这两个名字可以互换，我们下面统一用葛丽卿这个名字。

葛丽卿的美，在小镇上堪称绝冠，无人能及。

而比她的美貌更吸引人的，是她的纯。

她的纯洁，是发自内心、浑然天成的，绝非伪装做作所能奢望。浮士德虽已恢复青春，但阅历与见识并未随之消散。看到葛丽卿的第一眼，他便已不可自拔地坠入了爱河。

梅菲斯特当然是要撮合浮士德和葛丽卿。他潜入葛丽卿的房间，把一个珠宝盒放在了她的桌上。在后者把珠宝捐给教会后，他又把更贵重的珠宝赠予她。

纯洁如葛丽卿，但爱美的少女怎么会不喜欢珠宝呢？如此一来二去，她同意在花园里见浮士德一面。

以浮士德的才学见识风度和谈吐，加上他现在的青春俊美，少女是完全没有抵抗力的。

下面就出现了那著名的一幕，葛丽卿拿着一朵花枝，一片片摘下花瓣，念着“他爱我，他不爱我”占卜……当剩到最后一朵花瓣时，是“他爱我”。

此时，反倒是少女葛丽卿更深地沉溺进了爱河。浮士德呢，虽然也深爱葛丽卿，但他是过来人，知道自己的爱里，情欲占了太多地位。诚然现在是少年身，但毕竟曾经是行将就木的垂暮老人，对面纯洁如玉的花季少女，——念及此处，他不禁深感愧疚。

但在梅菲斯特的诱导和驱使下，他还是被拖回情欲轨道。

然后葛丽卿在她的纺车旁唱出了那首著名的（舒伯特谱曲）咏叹调”我的安宁已逝”（Meine Ruh’ ist hin）。她知道，自己再也回不去前些天那个纯洁无瑕的小女生了。

既然葛丽卿纯洁不再，浮士德沉沦于情欲，接下来就是一出又一出的惨剧了：

浮士德为了和葛丽卿方便幽会，给了后者安眠药，让她给母亲服下。葛丽卿的妈妈因安眠药过量而死；

葛丽卿在圣母像前忏悔：她已经未婚怀孕；

葛丽卿的哥哥闻讯来怒斥妹妹堕落，要与浮士德这个毁了他妹妹名声的男人决斗。在梅菲斯特的帮助下，浮士德刺死了葛丽卿的哥哥；

葛丽卿在精神错乱的情况下，将刚出生的婴儿溺死；

葛丽卿被判死刑，关进狱中。

当浮士德听闻葛丽卿被判死刑的消息，他逼着梅菲斯特一同赶往牢房，要救出他的爱人。

他们来到阴暗的牢房，见到了半疯半醒的葛丽卿。

少女虽然神智已经接近混乱，但她一眼看穿了面前两个男人的黑暗。她默默地摇头：“我不与你们一起逃走。”

她转身仰望苍天，喃喃低语：上帝啊，我是罪人，我接受你的审判，甘心承受一切惩罚。

浮士德与梅菲斯特转身离去之际，听见天上传来一个声音——

她得救了（Ist gerettet）。

是的，这个直接或间接导致了母亲、哥哥和孩子死亡的葛丽卿，她的罪，被上帝赦免了。

而浮士德，却与魔鬼梅菲斯特越走越近。

关于他的故事很多也各自五花八门，但都有一个共同的核心：他和魔鬼做了一桩交易（The Faustian Bargain）。

我们今天这里讲的故事，是以歌德（Goethe）的版本为主，另外衬托了一点比歌德早二百多年的 Christopher Marlowe 版。

歌德版《浮士德》的宏大叙事，其实是旧约圣经里「约伯记」的相同但镜面相反的框架故事：魔鬼在天庭和上帝打了个赌：您（上帝）最喜爱的仆人浮士德（相比约伯），我能把他带坏您信不信？

和约伯记里一样，上帝笑呵呵的接受了这个挑战。“我对人类还是颇有些信心的。“

那为什么说是镜面相反的框架故事呢？在约伯记里，魔鬼是用灾痛，用苦难，用人世间最‘悲惨’的东西去试探约伯，在这回魔鬼却准备用荣华富贵，用智慧美貌，用人世间最‘美好’的东西来带坏浮士德。

若说约伯印证了人类能够“贫贱不能移，威武不能屈”，那么浮士德要面对的，则是“富贵不能淫”的考验。

得到了上帝的默许，魔鬼也是信心满满，踌躇满志的来到世间找浮士德。在此他化名为：梅菲斯特（Mephistopheles）。

此时的浮士德，是一个年迈但博古通今的大学士。他穷尽当时人类知识之大成：哲学、法学、医学、神学，在每一个领域都达到了前所未有的境界。

但他不仅没有为自己的成就感到欣慰，反而是因不能再进一步突破而终日苦恼：

“我这可怜的傻瓜站在这里，却并不比昨天多知道一点！(yet here I am… no wiser than I was before)”。

他的智慧能力大到了我们难以想象的地步：为了一窥宇宙的终极奥秘，他甚至召唤来了地灵（Erdgeist）。但后者的到场立刻让浮士德发现，自己（人类智慧的极限）还是比这些灵体低了远不止一个层次。地灵表现出来的气场维度和境界，让他感到不仅无法驾驭，甚至无法理解，甚至连试图理解的词汇都很缺乏。

那一刻，他体会的是一种彻底的被“降维打击”。

万念俱灰的浮士德，就想服毒自尽。但恰在此时，窗外传来了复活节的晨钟，和悠扬的唱诗班歌声。他在那声音里仿佛听见一线人间的召唤，缓缓放下了毒杯。

复活节的清晨，死里逃生的浮士德和助手瓦格纳（Wagner），一起去郊外散步。

世界还是很美好的，阳光明媚，鸟鸣婉转，花香四散，清风微拂。过往的人群见到浮士德和瓦格纳，都停下脚步向他们致敬，因为在不久前，浮士德和他的父亲，曾用他们的智慧和爱心参与医治，协助民众渡过了一场大瘟疫。

学以致用，济世安民。人生如此，夫复何求？

但浮士德心里还是说不出的空虚。众人对他的真心崇拜并不能让他释怀：因为他知道对人生终极意义的探索，自己终究还是很难跨出下一步。他甚至又想起了昨晚的那个毒杯，或许还没有倒掉？

这时路旁忽然出现了一只神秘的黑狗，执着的跟着浮士德和瓦格纳回家，怎么赶都赶不走。

这只黑狗，当然就是那魔鬼梅菲斯特。浮士德把它带回了书房，自己精神世界的核心腹地。

浮士德还是难以平息心中的空虚。他坐下来，想重新翻译「约翰福音」里开始的那句「太初有道」（ In the beginning was the Word）。

这时黑狗在一旁开始变得烦躁不安。他躁动、吠叫、体形膨胀，终于“狗”的外壳裂开，它恢复了原形——魔鬼梅菲斯特。

他向浮士德解释自己的本质：我是那股神秘力量，永远作恶，但是会带来善的结果。

“Ein Teil von jener Kraft, die stets das Böse will und stets das Gute schafft / I am part of that power which would ever evil do, and ever does the good.“

梅菲斯特又更进一步向浮士德提议：”我知道你的困境，而我是唯一能够帮助你的力量。

我在世间可以为你服务，你想要的不管多么匪夷所思多么遥不可及，我都可以给你，让你体会到人间至乐。

但你（死后）灵魂归我。“

浮士德可不是一般的贩夫走卒。他深知人性最根本的悖论：任何的愿望，成功，幸福，和满足，在获得达到了的那一刹那，成功就会失去价值，幸福也不再满足。人已经开始盯着下一个愿望，永无止境。

那如何定义“人间至乐”呢？

但浮士德为自己的困扰纠缠，已非一天两天，他也渴望突破僵局，冲破那堵无形的墙。于是反复思考后，他毅然和魔鬼定下了那个契约，那个人类文学史上最出名的契约，也是一个他以为自己不可能输掉的契约：如果梅菲斯特能让他体会哪怕一刻真正的满足，他便甘愿献出灵魂。

而什么是真正的满足呢？

“Verweile doch, du bist so schön!“
”Linger a while, you are so fair!“
“让这一刻停住吧，你是如此美丽！”

只要有那么一刻，哪怕只是一个瞬间，浮士德能彻底沉醉于眼前的美好而不奢求下一个目标，他情愿把灵魂交给魔鬼。

There are two significant reasons why this individual is of particular importance to us. Let's start with the first one: it was during his reign that the Hundred Years' War between England and France officially commenced.

In the year 1328 AD, King Charles IV of France passed away without a male heir.

Being a king in medieval Europe generally involved one basic obligation: to at least have a son before dying, as otherwise it often led to complications.

Charles IV did not fulfill this expectation. The noblemen in his court, while feeling aggrieved, searched through family genealogies to look for a successor based on bloodline relations.

The situation became complicated as there were two candidates:

• Philip, Charles's paternal cousin (the son of his father's brother).

• Edward, the protagonist of this story, Charles's nephew (the son of his sister).

In terms of blood relations, Edward actually had a closer and better claim among the two. The problem is, the nobles pondered, how could they pass the French throne to the King of England?

Fortunately for the French, there was a written rule in the law stating that, "The throne shall pass from male to male and not to females." They invoked this rule, stating that Edward, despite being the son of the king's sister, had no right to succeed because the throne could not be inherited through a female.

Edward strongly disagreed. His argument? "The law says the throne shall not be passed to a female, but it doesn't say it cannot be passed to me through a female."

However, his arguments fell on deaf ears. Philip, known as Philip VI or Philip the Fortunate (Philippe le Fortuné), ascended the French throne, leaving Edward out of the equation.

However greed knows no bounds. For Philip VI, becoming the King of France wasn't enough. In 1337, he declared the reclamation of Gascony, the territory hitherto held by England.

This action greatly infuriated Edward III. "Pushing your luck too far, you little brat." he must have thought. "This means war."

He once again asserted his previously abandoned claim: "I am the true King of France." But this time, he didn't just argue based on reason, he resorted to warfare.

Edward, along with his eldest son, Edward the Black Prince, raised an army and launched an attack on France, marking the beginning of the Hundred Years' War.

The saying "like father, like son" proved true on the battlefield. The father-son duo were great warriors, achieving victory after victory. By the year 1360, they had occupied nearly one-third of the French territory, specifically the lower left region.

Now let's discuss the second crucial reason regarding Edward III, which relates to his descendants.

Edward had several sons and daughters, three of them were of particular significances to our story:

• His eldest son, Edward the Black Prince, which we discussed earlier;

• His third son, John of Gaunt, also known as John of Lancaster;

• His fourth son, Edmund of Langley.

As mentioned earlier, the Black Prince, Edward's eldest son, had fought in France for many years, earning great renowns and thus, was the undisputed heir to the throne.

John of Gaunt, the third son, gained the title of Duke of Lancaster through a marriage, thus becoming the leader of the House of Lancaster. Their emblem was the red rose.

Edmund, the fourth son, was bestowed the title of Duke of York, making him the leader of the House of York. Their emblem was the white rose.

And it is within the context of this series of events that the Wars of the Roses unfolded: a conflict between the House of Lancaster, represented by the red rose, and the House of York, represented by the white rose.

Let's take a quick detour, and look at China during the same period.

Zhu YuanZhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, had a first-born son named Zhu Biao, and a fourth son named Zhu Di (who became the Prince of Yan). Zhu Biao had a son named Zhu YunWen.

Originally, Zhu Biao was the undisputed heir to the throne. However, he died at a young age, so before his death, Zhu YuanZhang the emperor passed the throne to his grandson Zhu YunWen, who became known as Emperor Jianwen.

However, Zhu Di, the Prince of Yan and also the uncle of Emperor Jianwen, launched the Jingnan Rebellion, seized the throne, and proclaimed himself the new Emperor.

Returning to Edward III of England's story, the situation is eerily similar:

• Edward, the Black Prince, was the undisputed heir to the throne. However, he died in 1376, a year before his father.

• Edward III died in 1377 and passed the throne to his grandson Richard II, who was the son of the Black Prince.

• At that time, the new king was only ten years old.

• As a result, his uncle, John of Gaunt, who was mentioned earlier as the leader of the House of Lancaster represented by the red rose, gained significant power in the court.

Unlike Zhu Di, John of Gaunt did not directly usurp the throne but rather exerted a strong and domineering influence within the court, similar to the relationship between Emperor Xian of Han and Cao Cao the chancellor, in the Three Kingdoms period.

The situation displeased the young King Richard II. So, after patiently enduring for many years, upon the death of his powerful uncle in 1399, he immediately announced the confiscation of all the lands belonging to the House of Lancaster.

However, John of Gaunt, who had held control of the government for so many years and had a wide network of connections and supporters, had a son named Henry. This new Duke of Lancaster, Henry, didn't have to exert too much effort to overthrow Richard II from the throne.

(Interestingly, as it was mentioned earlier that Zhu Di launched the Jingnan Rebellion in August 1399, here, John's son Henry seized power in September 1399.)

Thus, England had a new king, Henry IV, from the House of Lancaster represented by the red rose.

He had obtained the throne through usurpation, which made his claim not 100% legitimate, and it planted the seeds of danger for the upcoming Wars of the Roses.

Autumn, 1066.

An army of men set forth from Normandy in northern France. According to later scholars, the group numbered anywhere between 8,000 to 10,000 individuals. Leading the expedition was Duke William of Normandy.

Their objective? To cross the Channel and launch a direct assault on England.

A few months earlier, the elderly King Edward of England, also known as Edward the Confessor, had just passed away. As he had no direct heir, the throne was passed to Harold II, the brother of the late king's widow.

As those familiar with European history would surely know, the death of a childless king is often guarantee for political turmoil.

Right on cue, shortly after Harold's ascension to the throne, King Harald Hardrada of Norway, made his move for the crown from the north. Leading a sizable army, he landed on September 20, 1066, in the northeastern part of England, near Humber, initiating an invasion.

Merely eight days later, as mentioned before, Duke William arrived and made his own landing on September 28, 1066, in the southern region of Pevensey.

The two invading forces vying for power had not coordinated their attacks beforehand. It can only be said that the fortunes were not in favor of the newly crowned King Harold II.

Perhaps it was pure luck, or it was fate, one would never know. But Duke William had originally planned to invade in August. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, bad weather caused a delay until the end of September, putting him eight days behind the Norwegian army from the north.

If he had set off in August, the course of English history would likely be very different.

Here's how the subsequent events unfolded:

• King Harold II led his elite forces northward to confront the invading Norwegian army that had landed first.

• In the Battle of Stamford Bridge, he achieved an absolute victory, slaying the enemy's commander, King Harald of Norway.

• However, Harold's English army also suffered significant casualties.

• They then swiftly marched across the English countryside, covering great distances in a single day, aiming to intercept Duke William in the south at the fastest possible speed.

It is conceivable that when Harold's army encountered William's troops, their strength, morale, supplies, and fatigue were all greatly diminished compared to just a few days earlier, when they triumphed over the Norwegian king.

Duke William and King Harold II met at Hastings, hence the famous Battle of Hastings.

The direct conflict lasted only one day, on October 14, 1066, from nine in the morning until nightfall.

Duke William's Norman army represented a typical continental European fighting force. They had cavalry, infantry, and archers, with well-developed military tactics.

On the other hand, Harold's English forces primarily relied on infantry equipped with large shields, supplemented by a small number of archers, focusing on defensive counter-attacks.

The English employed a skilled formation known as the shield wall, accompanied by long spears. They were impervious to arrows and cavalry charges.

William's cavalry and infantry made several valiant charges, but failed to gain the upper hand.

However, they (the French) noticed that during their retreats, the English troops couldn't resist the temptation to engage in pursuit. These pursuing forces were vulnerable on the flanks, and the tactic of "killing the pursuers" proved more effective than direct frontal attacks.

Thus, the French forces charged, retreated, and attacked the pursuers. Charge, retreat, attack the pursuers. Rinse, and repeat.

The battle turned into a war of attrition.

Finally, towards night fall, misfortune befell King Harold. Amidst the intense battle, an arrow flew through the air and struck him directly in the eye, almost piercing through his skull.

Fortunately for the French, a nearby knight swiftly struck Harold down with his sword.

"Harold is dead! Harold is dead!" The news spread across the battlefield, and the defeat of the English army became irreparable.

Duke William not only achieved the decisive victory, but more importantly, eliminated his main rival who posed the only challenge to his claim to the throne.

Capitalizing on his triumph, Duke William headed north, launching a relentless campaign that led him all the way to London.

Two months later, on Christmas Day, December 25 1066, within the walls of Westminster Abbey, this Duke from Normandy France was crowned King of England, marking a significant turning point in the country's history.

William was originally known as "William the Bastard" due to his illegitimate birth. However after his conquest, he became referred to as "William the Conqueror."

In the centuries that followed, French became the language spoken by the English court, nobility, and upper class. The fusion of French with Old English gradually evolved into the English language as we know nowadays.

According to some scientific studies, approximately 25% of the British population today can trace their genetic lineage back to this illegitimate son, William. Considering that the early American colonists were predominantly of British origin, it is likely that a significant number of Americans can also trace their ancestry back to him.

However, the more immediate impact to our series, “the Wars of the Roses”, is that English kings became landlords of French territories. Additionally, the intermarriage between the English and French royal families inevitably led to a cycle of claiming each other's thrones and territories.

Four years after the conquest, William's brother, Odo of Bayeux, commissioned a large-scale tapestry depicting the historic events in the form of a pictorial narrative. The tapestry, known as the Bayeux Tapestry, was created using the art form of embroidery and was initiated in 1070, completed in 1077.

Preserved to this day, the Bayeux Tapestry is currently housed in Normandy, France, serving as a remarkable visual record of the war that changed world history.

话说古埃及文明，那真是个灿烂辉煌，雄霸一方。但兴盛了近三千年，从第一王朝（First Dynasty，3100 BC）发展到了第三十王朝（Thirtieth Dynasty，340 BC），终于如残阳西下，日渐式微。

王朝衰落的原因之一，是东方日益强大的古波斯帝国。时间往前退一百多年，上一代的波斯君主一心一意的想吞并希腊，而且差一点儿就成功了：要不是 马拉松战役，温泉关战役（电影300），萨拉米斯战役，普拉提亚战役 中希腊人的卓越表现，希腊估摸着就要姓“波”而不姓“希”了。

波斯强攻未果，修生养息了一段时间，不再去啃希腊这块硬骨头，而是把目光指向了西南方的古埃及帝国。

此时的埃及法老，正是本文的主角，最后一位埃及本土君主，内克塔内布二世（Nectanebo II）。

内克塔内布在任内的早期，曾成功的抵挡了波斯的一轮进攻。但当波斯二次入侵时，他终于抵挡不住了，先是战败逃至 Memphis，然后逃至 Upper Egypt，然后似乎就从历史上消失了。

我们的故事，就从这里开始。

内克塔内布不仅是古埃及最后一位法老，他本人也是个大占卜师，星象家，魔术师。埃及几千年文明的积累，可不是白吹的。

他夜观星象掐指一算，知道埃及王朝气数已尽，被波斯占领是不可避免的了。怎么样才能避免血脉的断绝，大好河山从此被外族统治？

就像希腊文明中的德尔斐（Delphi）先知预言一样，内克塔内布算出来的卦也是隐晦其词，不肯把答案说明白。他只知道和两个人有关：马其顿新近崛起的腓力二世（Philip II of Macedon），和腓力的老婆，奥林匹亚丝（Olympias）。

是请他们从北方派遣援军吗？肯定不是。援军没腓力的老婆什么事，腓力也绝对不会帮忙。而且卦说的很明白：关键在奥林匹亚丝这个美妇人身上。

思前想后，内克塔内布福至心灵，豁然醒悟。“难道是这样？也只有可能是这一招了。”

他脸上不由露出一丝邪恶的笑容。

心动不如行动。他当下备了一匹马，连夜向北方的马其顿王国进发。

内克塔内布来到马其顿，没有对人说自己的真实身份，只自称是来自埃及的大占卜师。此时国王腓力二世正好在外面打仗，王后奥林匹亚丝接见了他。

内克塔内布自然是极尽吹嘘拍马之能事：“王后天香国色，举世无双。腓力娶妻如你，真是人生赢家啊！”

奥林匹亚丝略带愁容的说，“不瞒你说，我和腓力结婚多年一直没有生育。我很担心他会把我抛弃。”

内克塔内布等的就是她这一句。他假做惊讶道，“怎么可能。不瞒夫人，我刚才第一眼看到您时，就看到您喜事临头。”

奥林匹亚丝精神一振。她知道面前这位，是来自遥远神秘的古希腊第一占卜师。

内克塔内布装模作样的在那里又掐指又比划，又凝眉做苦思状，又开颜做惊喜状：“恭喜夫人，贺喜夫人。我已算出，今晚三更时分，会有埃及的正神 Amun 会化身为龙，与夫人进鱼水之欢。”

“要知道 Amun 可是我埃及的福神啊。弹无虚发，神勇过人。夫人一定有好事的！“

是夜三更，内克塔内布施展魔法，化身为龙，潜入奥林匹亚丝的卧室。

王后也不会说埃及话，只能深情呼唤，“哦，Amun！“

内克塔内布不敢说话，只施出浑身本事，抱住了王后奥林匹亚丝。

不久后，王后就高兴的告诉老公腓力二世，”我怀孕了。“

后来生下来的，就是亚历山大大帝（Alexander the Great）。

在 另一篇故事 里我们讲过，后来腓力二世遇刺身亡，亚历山大继承了‘父业’。他打败了波斯帝国，占领了波斯，也占领了被波斯占领的埃及。

这一回内克塔内布才安心的退出了舞台。他已经完成了他的历史使命。

埃及又回到了被‘埃及人’统治。

但是克琳希德和她的嫂嫂，也就是王后布伦希尔德（Brunhild）发生了争执。国王手下的大臣哈根（Hagen）是王后这边的近臣，与国王一起设计害死了齐格弗里德。

为此，克琳希德暗暗立下誓言，要为死去的丈夫复仇。而仇人除了那个大臣哈根之外，也包括她的亲哥哥，国王龚特尔（Gunther）。

但克琳希德孤身一人，只是个手无缚鸡之力的弱女子，她怎么对付国王，王后，和朝中的一众大臣？她可以利用的只有两个武器：亡夫留下的巨额遗产，和她本人天下无双的美貌。

这笔遗产，就是前一篇里提到的天下闻名的尼伯龙宝藏（Nibelung treasure）。本来是由法夫纳（Fafnir）化为猛龙守护着，在齐格弗里德浴血屠龙后落入了后者手中。后者即亡，财产就转到了他的遗孀手里。

克琳希德开始用宝藏拉拢朝中贵族，但被那个狡猾的大臣哈根识破。哈根找了个借口以国王的名义把财产没收充公，沉入莱茵河河底。

按照哈根的打算，他准备将来的某一天再把这宝藏打捞起来以为己用。他哪里知道，他和国王都将死在克琳希德手中，永远不会有机会享受这宝藏，甚至没有机会写下宝藏的地点。

而这一笔巨额的财富，据说一直到今天，都还静静地沉在莱茵河河底，等待它下一个主人。

失去了财富，克琳希德就只剩下美貌，智慧，和决心了。

这段故事发生在公元五世纪。那时候的大环境是日耳曼人和匈人的崛起和西迁：比如法兰克人（Franks）去了高卢，勃艮第人（Burgundians）在沃尔姆斯（Worms）安家，而匈人（Huns）则占据了以他们自己命名的匈牙利（Hungary）。

匈人的大首领，此时的匈牙利国王，正是大名鼎鼎的阿提拉（Attila the Hun）。

阿提拉新近丧妻，听说传闻中克琳希德的美貌，派人来沃尔姆斯提亲。

勃艮第国王龚特尔和他朝中的大臣，一直都有些畏惧阿提拉的势力，正好想借这个机会拉近两国的关系。只有那个哈根尖锐的指出：“克琳希德一直对亡夫之死耿耿于怀。她如果得到阿提拉的势力做后盾，恐怕对我们不利！”

但国王和其他贵族都不以为然，哈根也无力阻止这段婚事。

克琳希德先是闭门三十天，坚拒不见匈牙利使者。然后回心转意，毅然远嫁匈牙利。

克琳希德和阿提拉大婚之后，派使者来沃尔姆斯，请哥哥龚特尔，大臣哈根和其他贵族们，一起去匈牙利参加婚后庆祝。

哈根又是进谏国王：“你妹妹这是想对咱们下手了。此行凶多吉少，万万不可大意！”

但龚特尔还是不听：“阿提拉身为匈人国王，我身为勃艮第国王，去给他庆祝婚礼，他怎么会允许友好邻帮的君主受到伤害？这与国际外交法不符啊。“

哈根看劝不动，就派人物色了勃艮第最勇武的三千个壮士同行，这些武士都是以一敌十的武林高手。

但哈根还是不放心。在他们要渡过莱茵河之前，他看见有三个美人鱼在洗澡，就派人偷走了她们的衣服，以此要挟让美人鱼们预见此行的命运发展。

几个美人鱼羞怒之余，坦言相告：“除了国王手下的私人牧师能活着回去，你们此行的所有人都不能再回到勃艮第！”

哈根也够狠的。他在渡河的半路中找了个机会，把龚特尔的那个私人牧师打晕推入河中。“你是唯一一个能活着回去的？我先让你死，那就破了这个魔咒，我们自然也就不用担心了。” 他不禁为自己的机智暗暗得意。

谁想在大船开往匈牙利飞速进发的同时，一股神奇的水浪把那个落水牧师推到了勃艮第的岸边。他虽然被淹的近乎窒息，但终于捡回一条小命，正如美人鱼的预言，成为此行唯一活着回来的人。

龚特尔，哈根一行人来到匈牙利，受到阿提拉和克琳希德的隆重招待。诚如龚特尔的推论，友邦君主来为自己庆婚，又是新婚妻子的亲哥哥，阿提拉对来者待为上宾，保护周全，哪里有半点加害的意思。

但克琳希德在暗中早已计划好了一切。她的第一手棋：把来客吹捧的天花烂坠，言下之意是这些来访的英雄，每个都能抵上十个匈人。

这些勃艮第人本来就都是百里挑一的高手，一向自诩甚高。如此在邻国被大力推崇，一时间飘飘然，就真的有鹤立鸡群，蔑视群雄的感觉。匈人看在眼里，尊他们为客，一时也不好发作。

克琳希德的第二手棋：把勃艮第一边和匈人一边的敬拜日安排在同一天，同一个地点。

须知此时勃艮第人已经信奉了基督教，而匈人还在祭祀敬拜传统的地方神。信仰和敬拜在那时是人生一等一的大事，尤其是基督教明言：「除我以外，你不可有别的神 / Thou shalt have no other gods before me」，哪里能容忍匈人在面前拜“假”神？

双方剑拔弩张，差点儿就要打起来。幸好还是匈人一方在阿提拉的严明军纪下极度忍让，才不欢而散。

克琳希德的第三手棋：在接下来的一次友好比武中，她给自己这边的匈人勇士准备了一把无刃的钝剑。这在当时的表演比武中，是各方公认的预期传统。

但她给来访的勃艮第勇士，悄悄准备了一把开刃的利剑，吹毛断发，削铁如泥。

结果自然是匈人武士接连砍中勃艮第武士数剑，毫发无损。后者砍中匈人只一刀，匈人血溅当场，立时毙命。

这一来场面失控了，匈人隐忍了很久，此刻终于爆发。

双方开始直接群斗：勃艮第这边的三千个勇士虽说都是武林高手，但抵不住匈人人多，而且本身武力也未必就输给了他们。一个接着一个的，勃艮第武士在杀死敌人后，被新上来的另一个敌人杀死。

大庭被鲜血彻底的染红，然后血流到了庭外，把草地也变成了红色。

勃艮第这边的 Volker 在杀死三个匈人后，被阿提拉这边的来访使者 Hildebrand 杀死。这个 Hildebrand 不是匈人，是东哥特（Ostrogoths）国王派来匈牙利的使者。

匈人这边的 Iring 杀死了四个勃艮第勇士后，被哈根杀死。

到最后，三千勇士尽皆身亡，勃艮第这一边只剩下国王龚特尔，和大臣哈根两人。大势已去，二人不得不弃械投降。

按当时的规矩，如果贵族在放弃战斗后，胜利一方是不应该再加害他们的。但克琳希德为了报杀夫之仇，等这一天等了很久。她令人杀死了面前跪着的哥哥龚特尔，然后亲自起身，一刀砍下了哈根的头！

在旁边观看的，前面提到的东哥特使者 Hildebrand 再也看不下去了。他高喊，“不能坏了规矩！我们不斩降将！” 怒火中他拔剑上前，杀死了克琳希德。

（注）长篇史诗「尼伯龙根之歌（Nibelungenlied）」的第一主角，不是上一篇的齐格弗里德，而是本篇的克琳希德。史诗最早出场的主要人物是克琳希德，而全篇又以克琳希德之死收场。

这一段传说，或许来自两个历史事件：

1：公元 437 年，匈人与勃艮第人在沃尔姆斯（Worms）交战，勃艮第人全军覆没；
2：公元 453 年，匈人首领阿提拉在（最后一次）婚礼后神秘身亡。有传闻但没有证据，说凶手正是他的新婚妻子。

在某些版本里，哈根投降之后，克琳希德从他手里夺回了原本属于亡夫的宝剑 Balmung / Gram。她一手提着杀死丈夫的凶手（之一）龚特尔的头，一手拿着属于丈夫的宝剑，走向杀死丈夫的另一个凶手，哈根。

在那一刻，她已经知道了自己的结局。

但她没有片刻迟疑。这就是「克琳希德的复仇」。

他是前国王齐格蒙德（Siegmund）的遗腹子，王后齐格琳德（Sieglind）在逃难途中生下他后也撒手人世。幸好在她闭眼前的最后一刻，遇到森林里的小矮人雷金（Regin），把尚在襁褓中的婴儿交付给了他。

这个小矮人雷金，可不是一般的人物。他是矮人国大魔法师的儿子，在这片土地徘徊，其实是想夺取他兄弟法夫纳（Fafnir）拥有的黄金宝藏。但法夫纳化作一条猛龙守护宝藏，小矮人雷金根本接近它不得。

于是雷金把希望寄托在这个新收养的小孤儿身上。他一边抚养齐格弗里德长大成人，一边传授他十八般武艺，一边精心打造一把天下无双的利剑：Gram。

十几年过去，我们的主角已经长成一个武艺高强的英俊少年。他年轻气盛，手持 Gram 神剑只身闯入龙潭，和化身为猛龙的法夫纳大战八百回合，直杀得天昏地暗，日月无光。

最后齐格弗里德以一招「亢龙有悔」，把神剑插入了恶龙的心脏。

在击败恶龙之后，他更以龙血沐浴，使得浑身上下刀枪不入，百毒不侵，从此天下再无对手！

可是和古希腊神话中 阿喀琉斯的妈妈抓着他的脚踝浸入冥河，从而脚踝是他唯一弱点 的故事类似，在齐格弗里德沐浴龙血时，一片树叶飘下来沾在他的右后肩，使得这里成为他唯一的弱点命门。

拥有着举世无双的神剑，刀枪不入的身体，和天下第一的武功，齐格弗里德来到了勃艮第（Burgundy）。

在这里，他爱上了勃艮第公主，美丽的克琳希德（Kriemhild）。

为了向公主求婚，齐格弗里德结识了公主的哥哥，国王龚特尔（Gunther）。二人一见如故，国王也很喜欢这个外来的小伙子。但想把妹妹娶走？可没那么容易的好事。

原来这个国王龚特尔一直想追另一个美女：布伦希尔德（Brunhild）。但这个布伦希尔德是个女武神（Valkyrie），武功甚高，龚特尔自己完全无法搞定。于是国王许诺小伙儿：你帮我追到女武神，我就允许妹妹嫁给你。

齐格弗里德一听，这有何难？正好女武神类似在比武招亲：谁能赢了她就跟谁。于是我们的男主人公和女武神连赛了三场：标枪，跳远，扔石头。三战皆胜，女武神输的心服口服。

就这样，王国里新成就了两段婚事：齐格弗里德和公主克琳希德，国王龚特尔和女武神布伦希尔德。

但好事多磨，女武神的心里很不平衡：比武赢我的明明是那个齐格弗里德，怎么现在丈夫换了个人？比武招亲不是这么玩儿的啊。

国王龚特尔反复解释：“那个小伙子是我的下人。他都能赢你，你嫁给他的主人当然更赚。”

但女武神还是不能释怀。在新婚当夜，她把国王捆了起来，拒绝圆房。

结果还是齐格弗里德在国王的要求下再次出马，潜入女武神的寝室制伏了她。

制伏的具体细节，就由读者们自行想象了。但有一件事是肯定的：齐格弗里德离开的时候，拿走了女武神贴身的腰带和戒指，回家后交给了自己的新婚妻子，克琳希德。

这也就为后来事情的发展埋下了祸根。

两对夫妇各自成婚，相安无事了几年，然后麻烦来了。

有一次在教堂门口，她们俩现在都是王后了，克琳希德和布伦希尔德，为了谁地位更高些争了起来。

布伦希尔德（女武神）撇撇嘴说，“你老公当年是我老公国王的下人。”

克琳希德也不示弱，把齐格弗里德在布伦希尔德新婚夜取走的腰带和戒指拿了出来，“你看这是什么？我老公当年你可把你制的服服帖帖的，要不要我回忆一下那晚的细节啊？“

女武神又羞又怒，二人不欢而散。

但这一幕叫国王龚特尔手下的一名大臣，哈根（Hagen）看到了。他发誓要保卫国王和王后的尊严，就说服了龚特尔，要定计杀死齐格弗里德。

国王龚特尔和大臣哈根，谎称遭受了邻国的军事威胁，准备与之开战。做为武林第一高手的齐格弗里德，理所当然的要披甲出征奔往前线。

此时克琳希德已有不详的预感。她梦见自己养的一只小鸟被两只老鹰杀死。所以在和丈夫告别的时候，她伤心欲绝，反复叮嘱他，「望君多珍重，归来仍少年。」

齐格弗里德走后，那个阴险的大臣哈根来找克琳希德：“你老公虽然武功卓绝，天下少有敌手，但战场上瞬息万变，极度危险，实在是大意不得。”

“我听说他全身还有一处弱点。如果你告诉我在哪里，我为他专门订制一个护甲，把那里好好保护起来，这样就万无一失了！”

克琳希德想起刚做的那个梦，更加担心丈夫的安全，就没有识破哈根的诡计。她告诉他：“我丈夫的命门在右后肩三寸半的地方。“

哈根拍胸脯保证，“你就把他的安危交给我手上吧。” 转身离开，一脸的奸笑。

这一天，齐格弗里德和哈根同行。在森林里的一片泉水旁，小齐俯身饮水，完全不知大难已然临头。

机不可失，时不再来。哈根看看左右无人，一支标枪从背后插入了齐格弗里德的右后肩。只听一声惨叫，鲜血汩汩涌出，德国中世纪的第一大英雄，就这么死在一个卑鄙小人之手。

后来克琳希德从蛛丝马迹中，发现了杀害丈夫的凶手。她远嫁匈牙利，多年后杀死龚特尔和哈根为丈夫报仇，那是另一段故事了：「克琳希德的复仇」。
